In 1859 Joseph married Sophia Pettit in Bottisham. The 1861 census, 1871 census and 1881 census shows that Joseph and Sophia had the following children:

• Joseph Webb, born 2q1856 (Newmarket, 3b, 509) in Bottisham. Joseph was a brickmaker labourer.

• Charles Webb, born 1862 in Bottisham, a labourer. In 4q1889 (Cambridge, 3b, 1078), Charles married Hannah Day, born 4q1870 (Cambridge, 3b, 485). The 1901 census shows Charles and Hannah living in Cambridge with their children:
  • Kate Florence Webb born 1q1891 (Cambridge, 3b, 489)
  • Arthur Lawrence Webb born 1q1895 (Cambridge, 3b, 457)

  Charles is not found in the 1911 census, however, Hannah and her son Arthur are shown living in Cambridge with Charles' youngest brother Arthur.

• David Webb, born 1q1863 (Newmarket, 3b, 564) in Bottisham, a tailor's porter. In 3q1888 (Downham, 4b, 513), David married Rebecca Napthin. The 1901 census and 1911 census shows David, a railway signalman, living in Cambridge with his wife Rebecca (born 1874 in West Dereham, Norfolk) and their children
  • Frederick Henry George Webb born 3q1889 in Willingham, Cambs (Chesterton, 3b, 457)
  • Sidney Arthur Webb born2q1891 in Henham, Essex (Bishop Stortford, 3a, 516)
  • Florence Ellen Rebecca Webb born 4q1892 in Henham, Essex (Bishop Stortford, 3a, 462)
  • Alice Sophie Webb born 2q1894 in Cambridge (Chesterton, 3b, 451)
  • David Stanley Horace Webb born about 1907 in Cambridge

• Ellen Webb, born about 1864 in Bottisham.

• Susan Webb, born 2q1866 (Newmarket, 3b, 541) in Barnwell.

• Frederick Webb , born 1872 in Cambridge

• Kate Webb, born 1q1875 (Cambridge, 3b, 477)

• Arthur William Webb, born 2q1878 (Cambridge, 3b, 544). The 1911 census shows Arthur as a single, 32-year old publican in Cambridge

The 1871 census describes Sophie as widowed but the 1881 census shows Joseph alive and well.

Sophia was illiterate as her signiture on both her marriage certificate and her son's birth certificate is "the mark of Sophia Webb, mother"

Joseph and Sophia lived in Bottisham. By the time of the 1871 census Sophia and family had moved to Cambridge.

On 21st February 1881 Sofia died of heart disease. The 1881 census shows Joseph and family living at 110B East Rd in Cambridge but by the time of the 1891 census Joseph and family had moved to Woodford in Essex.

Joseph was illiterate, as he signed the marriage certificate with an "X", however, in 1898, on his son's marriage certificate, Joseph is described as "of independent means". Robert Webb (robert-webb@btconnect.com) describes how Joseph inherited £100 from Jeremiah Burling as "his favourite nephew" in 1883. The 1901 census (page 1 and page 2) shows Joseph as jobbing gardenerer living at, or near, the White Hart Inn in South Woodford High Road.
