In 1859 Joseph married Sophia Pettit in Bottisham. The 1861 census, 1871 census and 1881 census shows that Joseph and Sophia had the following children:

The 1871 census describes Sophie as widowed but the 1881 census shows Joseph alive and well.

Sophia was illiterate as her signiture on both her marriage certificate and her son's birth certificate is "the mark of Sophia Webb, mother"

Joseph and Sophia lived in Bottisham. By the time of the 1871 census Sophia and family had moved to Cambridge.

On 21st February 1881 Sofia died of heart disease. The 1881 census shows Joseph and family living at 110B East Rd in Cambridge but by the time of the 1891 census Joseph and family had moved to Woodford in Essex.

Joseph was illiterate, as he signed the marriage certificate with an "X", however, in 1898, on his son's marriage certificate, Joseph is described as "of independent means". Robert Webb (robert-webb@btconnect.com) describes how Joseph inherited £100 from Jeremiah Burling as "his favourite nephew" in 1883. The 1901 census (page 1 and page 2) shows Joseph as jobbing gardenerer living at, or near, the White Hart Inn in South Woodford High Road.
