In 1864 James married Catherine Bush at St Mary's church in Lambeth. At the time, James was living at Fountain Court (presumably in Lambeth).
James and Catherine had the following children:
- Alice Cook, born 1q1866 (St George Hannover Square, 1a, 283). The

shows Alice as a 15 year old domestic servant.

- James Cook, born 1872 in Waltham Abbey, Essex, a confectioner, in the
1891 census,
- Ada Cook, born 1q1874 in Bow (Poplar, 1c, 632)
- Louisa Cook, born 4q1875 in Bow (Poplar, 1c, 662). On
14th September 1899
Louisa married Arthur Edward Drake (born 3q1876, Edmonton, 3a, 223). The
1901 census
shows Arthur and Louisa living at 46 Teviot Street, Bromley by Bow, Poplar. The
1911 census
shows Arthur and Louisa living at 28 Altmore Ave; East Ham with their daughters:
- Elsie May Drake born 1q1902 (West Ham, 4a, 87) in Plaistow, Essex
- Vera Winifred Drake born about 4q1906 (Poplar, 1c, 514) in Bow, Middlesex
- John Thomas Cook, born 1877 in Bow
- William J. Cook, born 2q1879 in Bow (Poplar, 1c, 59). In 3q1900 (West Ham, 4a, 47) William married Alice Smith (born about 1876 in South Hackney).
The
1901 census
shows William and Alice living at 160 Roseberry Ave; East Ham. William is described as a Corn and Seed Broker's clerk. The
1911 census
shows William and Alice living in Slewins Lane, Hornchurch, with their servant and three daughters:
- Constance Muriel Cook, born 2q1902 (West Ham, 4a, 77) in Upton Park, Essex
- Winifred Ivy Cook, born 4q1906 (West Ham, 4a, 217) in Forest Gate, Essex
- Dorothy Alice Cook, born 3q1909 (Romford, 4a, 606) in Romford, Essex
- Herbert Alfred Cook, born 2Q1882 (Woolwich, 1d, 1174), a shipping clerk. In 2Q1907 (West Ham, 4a, 524) Herbert married Ruth Dadd (born 4q1881 (West Ham, 4a, 148). The
1911 census
shows Herbert and Ruth living at 54 Heigham Road, East Ham.
The family moved house a lot!
- In 1864 James and Catherine were married in Lambeth and were living in Fountain Court
- In 1866 they were living in St George, Hannover Square when Alice was born
- In 1871 they were living in in Cheshunt, Herts, as shown in the
1871 census
- In 1872 they were living in Waltham Abbey when James jnr was born
- From 1872 to 1878 they were living in Bow, when Ada, Louisa, John and William were born
- In 1881 they were living in Plumstead, Kent, as shown in the
1881 census
- In 1891 they were living in Queen's Road, West Ham, as shown in the
1891 census
- In 1901 they were living in Reymond Road, West Ham, as shown in the
1901 census.
At the time of his marriage, James's occupation was gunmaker, although by 1881, perhaps ironically, he was selling life assurance instead.
By the time of his son John's wedding in 1902 James had died. Also, by this time he had become known as Thomas James Cook, perhaps in honour of his father, Thomas.

The back of this photo says "Leslie and his Grandma". This is probably Catherine with her grandson
Leslie Cook.
