The 1841 census and 1851 census shows that Thomas Cook was born in about 1796 in Bath, Somerset, while Sarah Taylor was born in about 1800 in Whitechapel. Thomas was a policeman, and Sarah a gun polisher. Thomas and Sarah had (at least) the following children:

• Eliza Cook, born about 1835 in Lambeth
• Thomas Cook, born about 1838 in Whitechapel. Thomas does not appear in the 1851 census.
• James Cook, born 28th December 1844 in Whitechapel, St George in the East. The 1861 census shows James as a 16-year old, living with his uncle James Billinger, an oil cloth manufacturer in Brixton.

Between 1841 and 1851 Thomas and Sarah lived at York Place on Lower Chapman Street (now called Bigland Street) in Whitehapel

By the time of the 1861 census Thomas and Sarah had moved from York Place, and by 1864 Thomas had died, as shown on his son's marriage certificate.
